We are delighted to start featuring work by acclaimed artist, Debra Korluka. Debra's traditional art is Byzantine iconography. Her work is in collections nationally and internationally and she was the first American invited for exhibition into both Russia and Ukraine after the fall of communism. She has received numerous awards. An album/book about her was created and published by a publishing house in Russia. Her style reveals the beauty of the glorious Byzantine tradition.
The inspiration of Debra’s art has traditionally come from her strong family heritage in the Russian Orthodox church. However, these new pieces are inspired by her love for horses. She began painting and bringing the horse elements into her art. Debra was now able to be creative with the same techniques of iconography, but focus on horses. Debra has used iconography in developing and designing the beautiful items we are featuring in the Equestrian Moms shop.
Although she didn’t have an equine background, Debra introduced her children to the horse world at young ages which turned her into an Equestrian Mom. Her daughter loved the sport and participated in Pony Club, the dressage circuit as well as showing the various horses they owned.
She absolutely loved that equine sports are such a wonderful activity for the whole family, and was instrumental in developing values in kids. Her daughter learned goals and responsibility through the sport. It’s not about winning; the horse is your companion and it comes first.
The most challenging part of being an Equestrian Mom for Debra was the safety risk that is posed by the sport. Although Pony Club is such a great support for both children and parents, especially regarding safety, there is just a different feeling as a parent when you are watching your child out there.
Unfortunately, EquestrianMoms.com wasn’t around when Debra became an Equestrian Mom and gained her lifetime of learning through traveling within the horse community and networking. She was fortunate to be mentored by friends with experience within the community.
Debra’s advice for new Equestrian Moms: Most importantly, treasure the moments as they come because they will become memories that will bond you to your child. Her biggest piece of practical advice is to not buy your child’s first horse. Lease the horse so that you can gain knowledge on what the sport requires. It’s important that your child and the horse match, and there are so many factors that determine a good match. The purchase of a horse is the least amount of the total investment you will have to put in over the course of your child’s career.
We are honored to be featuring a few items from her vast collection in our shop with special pricing for a limited time! Click here to go directly to Debra Korluka’s designs in the Equestrian Moms shop.
